Adrian Monk is seen playing the clarinet in these 2002 Monk episodes: "Mr. Monk and the Candidate" (S1.1) and "Mr. Monk and the Red-Headed Stranger" (S1.12). Some viewers took issue with this choice of instruments for the germaphobe character. As a wind instrument, a clarinet requires the player to be in contact with their own spit, so they thought an instrument like the violin or piano would have made more sense. Other viewers brought up the point that Adrian Monk's germaphobia wasn't rational, so maybe in his mind, his clarinet was hygienic.
