In Despicable Me, Gru completes an application to adopt the three orphan girls. In that application, Gru's first name is given as Felonious, meaning "relating to or involved in crime." (This is not a name parents would typically choose for their child, but it works for the villainous character of Gru.) There's also some interesting trivia around the reason for the last name Gru. The French word "la grue" means a crane, and Gru's legs are long and thin, resembling those of a giant crane. The unusual name was passed on to Gru's baby son in Despicable Me 4. He became Felonius Gru Jr.
