When Dirty Dancing was being made, no one believed it would work. There were significant challenges to overcome. At the top of the list was the tension between stars Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. They'd worked together before on the film Red Dawn and didn't exactly get along. This contributed to a tense atmosphere on set, despite their on-screen chemistry. In addition, the film's small budget meant it had to be shot in a mere 43 days. To save money, the shooting took place during the off season in Virginia and North Carolina instead of the expensive Catskills in upstate New York, where the film's story is set. Remember the famous "lake lift" scene? The weather didn't cooperate. It was filmed in October in freezing water, and Grey's lips turned blue between takes.
