At the 1999 Academy Awards ceremony, the powerful World War II film — which presented the desperate and brutal events of 1940s warfare as realistically as possible — won the following:
- Best Director
- Best Cinematography
- Best Sound Effects
- Best Editing
- Best Sound
Despite being a favorite of film critics and placed in over 150 top 10 lists around the country, Saving Private Ryan did not win Best Picture. It lost in that category to Shakespeare in Love.
