Veidt played the villainous Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser, despite being a fervent anti-Nazi in real life who donated much of his salary to war relief. He was on loan from MGM so Warner Bros. had to match his high salary which was $5,000 per week for a total of $25,000. Ingrid Bergman actually had to take a pay cut for her role.
